The distinctive feature of this edition of the “Kalevala” (a Karelian-Finnish epic based on Karelian folk epic songs) is its translation, first done in prose by the publisher and author of popular science books for young people Eduard Andreyevich Granstryom (1843-1918). The first publication of this translation (1881) was an extremely courageous act: at that time, a poetic translation of the Kalevala was considered almost "canonical" by L.B. Belsky, completed in 1849. Remarkably, having come out in 1898 and in the 1910s, the prose account of the epic by Granstryom was forgotten by publishers until the 70s of XX c.
