The album is preceded by an introductory article by N.S. Leskov “On the illustrations of „Dead Souls“. In the article, the author tells the history of the publication of Agin's drawings, and compares them with the illustrations of other artists, finding that Agin tried to make "the types of Gogol's faces that were familiar to him as a contemporary”. The first edition was published by E. Bernardsky in 1846 in the form of 18 issues of four drawings each, a total of 25 issues was planned, but publication was discontinued after a rift between the publisher and Goryainov, an Arkhangelsk honorable citizen who was among the publishers and who subsequently took over the publishing rights and the plates of these drawings. In 1892, the bookseller D. Fyodorov bought from Goryainov's heirs plates of both previously published and 28 unpublished drawings engraved by Bernardsky, and published them first under the title “One hundred drawings for the poem of Gogol”, and then, in the same year, a second and third edition, but already under the title “One hundred and four drawings for the poem of N.V. Gogol Dead Souls”, which, in addition to the 100 drawings mentioned above, also included a photo of the announcement of the first edition and three more drawings by Agin, reproduced from drawings in the possession of a famous bibliophile Yevfremov.
