Academician Igor Emmanuilovich Grabar (1871-1960) is an artist, art historian, art critic, stood at the origins of the national museum science. Student of I.E. Repin, P.P. Chistyakov. Participant of creative associations `Мir iskusstva` (World of art), `Union of Russian Artists`. He was the initiator and editor of a multi-volume work "History of Russian Art", as well as the author of a number of its most important chapters (1909 - 1916, the planned 12 volumes were released five; much later, in Soviet times, were released five volumes of the new "History of Russian Art", 1953 - 1969). Collected in this work valuable artistic and archival material made it possible to widely demonstrate the richness and greatness of Russian art. To this day this study remains the most comprehensive and thorough work on Russian painting, architecture and sculpture. The present edition is valuable in that it has a fourth volume, considered lost. The volume is devoted to a study of Moscow architecture in the Baroque and Classicist periods and the Russian architecture after Classicism. The value of this work is also great because part of the Russian cultural heritage was lost in the revolutions and wars of the 20th century, and is available only in the works of pre-revolutionary art historians. In the processing and publication of numerous parts, the most famous and brightest figures of Russia took part: Russian artists А. Benoîs, I.Ya. Bilibin, A.M. Vasnetsov, architects F.F. Gornostaev, A.V. Schusev, I.A. Fomin, academicians of art N.P. Kondakov, S.K. Makovsky, N.К. Roerich, the priest N.A. Skvortsov and others. It is no coincidence that it was I.E. Grabar was the creator of a comprehensive multi-volume "History of Russian Art". The first idea of the publication of "History of Russian Art" occurred to I.E. Grabar in 1902, when the publisher of the magazine "Niva" A.F. Marx asked him to revise and supplement the "History of Art" by P. P. Gneditch. By refusing to "rework", I.E. Grabar suggested that he publish his own "History of Russian art". He long studied the archives of the Academy of Arts, the Academy of Sciences, the Senate, Synod, Ministry of the Imperial Court. The entire edition was to consist of 12 volumes (3,000 illustrations); architecture was supposed to be isolated in special volumes. Between 1909 and 1916, five volumes consisting of 22 issues were published (the fourth volume contained an additional 23 issues). The most valuable artistic and archival material collected in this work made it possible to demonstrate the richness and greatness of Russian art on a wide scale.
