In 1851-1858 he studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, after which he was sent abroad as a pensioner. He worked in Switzerland in the North. France. In 1861, before the end of his retirement, he returned to Russia. In the spring of 1862, his wedding with Elizaveta Gavrilovna Vladimirtsova took place. From 1860 to 1870, he traveled a lot around the country in order to study his native nature, worked hard and fruitfully. In 1867, two years after the death of Elizabeth Gavrilovna, Klodt married for the second time. He worked as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts (1873-1886). Mikhail Konstantinovich Klodt died on May 16 (29), 1902.

Klodt's works are characterized by scrupulous realism of the image, impeccable drawing with careful elaboration of details, excellent mastery of promising solutions, rigor and harmony of composition, the ability to "animate" nature with the presence of a person.
