Collection, 2 Letters with Historical Content, from the Mussar Scholars Rabbi Zvi Levithan and Rabbi Yitzchak Meltzan – disciples of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter to Rabbi Shraga Meir Leizerowitz of Kelm – England
1. A historical letter in the handwriting and with the signature of Rabbi Eliezer Zvi Levithan to Rabbi Shraga Meir Leizerowitz. Dated: Erev Shabbat Nachamu 1914. The letter was sent from Jerusalem during the First World War and Rabbi Eleizer Zvi describes the situation in the Land of Israel in detail: And the situation here in the Holy Land is extremely grave and the terrible war causes great expense. And no person will lift up his hands and feet to travel as much as from city to city. In the letter he also mentions "Rabbi Moshe Klears Av Beit Din of Tiberius". And many other matters regarding various yeshivot, donations and people. 2. A letter in the handwriting and with the signature of Rabbi Yitzchak Meltzan to the same addressee and from the same date. He also talks about the situation even travelling away from here is very difficult, the beaches are almost locked, and may God fulfill all our wishes for the good Rabbi Eliezer Zvi Leviathan [1840-1816]. A disciple of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter. In 1863 he founded the first version of the Slabodka Yeshiva. He appointed Rabbi Natan Zvi Finkel as mashgiach of the yeshiva, who later became famous as the Alter of Slabodka". In his old age he immigrated to Jerusalem and established a yeshiva in Givat Shaul (the yeshiva is also mentioned in the letter before us). Rabbi Yitzchak Meltzan [1854-1917], son of Rabbi Shmuel Meltzan of Slutsk. Author of the famous book of the Vilna Gaon Even Shlomo. The book was eventually published by his son Rabbi Yitzchak. Rabbi Yitzchak was incredibly fluent in all areas of the Torah. Rabbi Yisrael Salanter, who was known to be extremely wary of exaggerations referred to him as a complete Talmud He was involved in publication of the Vilna Gaon kabbalistic works (the letter before us also discusses publication of the books). | Rabbi Shraga Meir Leizerowtiz [1840- 1929] a rabbi in London and a famous Torah scholar. Corresponded extensively with the foremost leaders of his generation, and had a close relationship with the leaders of the Mussar Movement. He also had a close relationship with Rabbi Shlomo Elyashiv, author of the Leshem. From his dwelling place in England he worked extensively for the observance of Shemittah in the Land of Israel and immigrated to Israel toward the end of his life. | Folding marks.
