R. Chaim Walkin. Yeshivas Volozhin Vilna 1940. Holocaust.
Historic autograph letter by R. Chaim Walkin written in Vilna in May of 1940. Following the German- Soviet invasion of Poland in September 1939, Vilna was transferred to Lithuania, according to the Soviet–Lithuanian treaty. Thousands of Jewish refugees, including most of the Lithuanian Yeshivos together with their Roshei Yeshiva escaped to Vilna. This continued until June 1941, when the Germans invaded Vilna and annihilated the Jewish Community. Amongst the Yeshivos which escaped to Vilna was the historic Yeshivas Volozhin, led by R. Chaim Walkin. In this letter he describes the difficult and chaotic conditions prevailing in Vilna. The letterhead was printed specifically for the Yeshiva’s sojourn in Vilna.
R. Chaim Walkin (1896-1943), was a son of R. Aaron Walkin, Rav of Pinsk. He was the son in law of R. Yaakov Schapiro (son of R. Refoel Schapiro) whom he succeeded as Rosh Yeshiva in Volozhin. He was the last Rosh Yeshiva of Volozhin and was murdered by the Nazis in 1943.
23 by 30 cm. Some damage with minor loss of text.
