“As to the subject of cremation, we have been led by degrees to publish the present work. Having been called from time to time by our friends in different parts of the country to explain and to give a clear investigation of a custom, so obscure and unheard of amongst our Jewish race, our mind was more and more led to consider the scriptural and rabbinical passages which refer to this subject.” (Introduction).

Benjamin Shezwick (1853-1915) was both rabbi (he taught at the Montefiore College in Ramsgate), as well as entrepreneur (he established the popular Shewzik's Russian Vapour Baths) in London’s East End.
