Machzor in Elaborate Silver Binding – Italy, Mid-18th Century – Family Coats of Arms - Machzor in elaborate binding. Northern Italy, [perhaps Bologna], mid-18th century. Silver, repoussé and engraved (unmarked; clasps marked with unidentified mark and maker's mark ”NP”); print on paper. Elaborate binding, decorated identically on both sides with an impressive high relief featuring rich vegetal patterns incorporating flowers, rocailles and acanthus leaves in rococo style. The center of the binding – the front and back – features convex cartouches bearing the coats of arms of Italian Jewish families: a pair of erect, hissing lions standing on either side of a tall tower on the front side (a similar coat of arms was used by the Grassini, Calimani, Moravia, Navarro, Forti and Della Roca families). The back side features an erect, hissing lion resting on a branch (a similar coat of arms was used by the Pacifico, Catalan, Treves and Meldola families). The book: Year-round Italian-rite machzor. Thickness: 7 cm. Overall good condition. Minor fractures. Warping and old soldering repairs, mainly to edges and near joints of clasps. Clasps may be more recent.
