Important Letter Handwritten by Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Ha'Cohen Kook about the Kabbalist Rabbi Shimon Lidar Horowitz and about the Study of the Secrets of the Torah in Our generation - Jaffa, 1901
Rare!
A letter handwritten and signed by Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Ha'Cohen Kook, the rabbi of Jaffa and the settlements. Addressed to the heads of the Etz Chaim Talmud Torah and Yeshiva of Jerusalem, Rabbi Yechiel Michel Tikochinsky and Rabbi Nachum Ragozintsky. Nice, orderly script on Rabbi Kook's official stationery. Letters by him from this period of time are rare, especially those with important content such as the letter before us.
The content of the letter: Rabbi Kook calls the attention of the rabbis to the difficult situation of the kabbalist Rabbi Shimon Zvi Horowitz "who lives a life of sorrow and pressure".
Rabbi Kook explains that his request for help serves two functions. The first: "To help a dear and excellent Torah scholar in distress". The second: "To honor and respect the study of the secrets of the Torah, since our redemption depends on it".
Here, Rabbi Kook elaborately explains the importance of the appropriate people studying the secrets of the Torah. Thus, the letter contains a detailed account of Rabbi Kook's attitude towards the study of Kabbala in our days.
Rabbi Kook's signature appears at the end of the letter.
The letter was printed in "Igrot Ha'Re'ayah"
Rabbi Shimon Lidar Horowitz (1870-1947) was the eldest of the kabbalists of Jerusalem. He was a frequenter of Rabbi Kook's home.
He was born in Lida (thus his name 'Lidar') on the 12th of Sivan 1870. He studied in a yeshiva in Vilnius, where he secretly studied kabbala.
He was one of the founders of the Sha'ar Ha'Shamayim kabbalist yeshiva and the author of several kabbala books. He studied Torah at the Etz Chaim Yeshiva, headed then by Rabbi Shmuel Salant, and Kabbala at the Beit El yeshiva, since in those days, there was no yeshiva for Ashkenazic Kabbalists in Jerusalem. He corresponded with the most prominent kabbalists in Israel and abroad.
He was also preoccupied with finding the Ten Lost Tribes. His book on the subject "Kol Mevaser" was approbated by rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Ha'Cohen Kook.
During the Holocaust, the kabbalists of Jerusalem held a special prayer to stop the Nazis from conquering the Land of Israel. They were headed by Rabbi Shimon Horowitz. One of its participants, Rabbi Moshe Ya'ir Weinstock, described the special prayer: "We gathered a kind of Beit Din and excommunicated Hitler and Goebbels and their assistants. Indeed, Rommel was immediately defeated and escaped Egypt".
