Manuscript, a Large Impressive Book for a Prayer Leader - Prayers said by the Bimah on Days of the Week, Sabbath and Holidays - the Late 19th Century Early 20th Century
Manuscript, a book for prayer leaders containing all the prayers and songs the prayer leader says while standing beside the Bimah [the version of the title page].
Central Europe, the late 19th century early 20th century.
An anthology of prayers compiled for the times the leader prayer is standing beside the Bimah on which the Torah scroll is read. The prayers are for the days of the week and for Sabbath. Most of them are said only by the prayer leader and a few by the congregation as well.
The prayers:
Prayers for the days of the week: the "Ve'Tegaleh Ve'Tera'eh"; "Mi She'Berach" for the sick and for the mother; Birkat Ha'Gomel; Yehi Ratzon after the reading of the Torah.
Prayers for Sabbath and holidays: Lecha Dodi, Mizmor Shir Le'Yom Ha'Shabbat, Kiddush for Sabbath and holidays, Havdalah, Av Ha'Rachamim, "Mi She'Berach" for the sick and for the mother, Birkat Ha'Gomel, Birkot Ha'Haftara, Yakum Purkan, Birkat Ha'Chodesh, Hazkarat Neshamot, Ashrei Yoshvei Betecha, blessings public fasts, the blessings of the Megilah, Shoshanat Ya'akov, the blessings of Erusin and Nissu'in, Seder Brit Milah.
We have here documentation of early Ashkenazic customs, according to which the first verse of "Ashrei" after the reading of the Torah, and additional prayers are said aloud by the prayer leader.
In the blessing of "Ha'Noten Teshu'ah Le'Melachim", "President Eduard ---" (the name was intentionally erased) is mentioned.
The versions of "El Maleh Rachamim"
At the end of the book appear thirty five versions [!] of the prayer "El Maleh Rachamim", with names of deceased and the sum of money that was donated for the ascent of their soul. We have here, unique, precise information about the important figures of the community to which the book of prayers had belonged.
Among the names appears the name of "Rabbi Avraham Ben Zvi Ze'ev" who was the rabbi of the community for 44 years and the name of the head of the Chevra Kadisha, "Ze'ev ben Ya'akov David Ha'Levi". Many names are referred to as "Ha'Chaver" [the friend].The title indicates that the manuscript was most likely used by a community in Germany.
The versions of "El Maleh Rachamim" are written in different scripts; some of them in round Hebrew script and others in scribal script.
The structure of the volume
A high volume containing approximately forty large pages, on thick parchment-like paper. Nice, large script.
The pages are numbered: [2], 1-39; 41-56; 15 [should be 14], 1; 1 pp.
Actually, the volume is an anthology that was edited by the community for years, with new prayers being added and written on the empty leaves or written on new leaves that were added to the volume. The first section [1-39] was written on bright, clean paper. The second section [41-56] however, was written years earlier by a different scribe on older paper. These pages are framed by a double frame. Then there is a third section, which includes the versions of "El Maleh Rachamim".
Almost all the prayers are vowelized.
72 pp. 21x31 cm. Nice orderly script. Old binding with metal decorations on its margins (slightly damaged).
Condition: Good. The ancient leaves (as described above) are torn and stained. Typical wear.
