8 Pages Handwritten by Rabbi Bezalel Ronsburg - Novellae by the Dayan Rabbi Zerach Eidelitz of Prague, the Disciple of Rabbi Yehonatan Eibeschitz and a Dayan of the Beit Din of the Noda Bi'Yehuda - Have Never been Printed!
Eight pages handwritten by Rabbi Bezalel Ronsburg with Talmudic novellae by Rabbi Zerach Eidelitz, a leading disciple of Rabbi Yehonatan Eibeschitz and a Dayan of the Beit Din of the 'Noda Bi'Yehuda'. An important discovery! We hardly know of Talmudic novellae by Rabbi Zarach, only of Aggadic novellae! To the best of our knowledge, the novellea in the letter has never been printed!
Description of the manuscript
Two single leaves (written on both their sides) handwritten by Rabbi Bezalel Ronsburg. On the first page, a scholarly discussion whose beginning is missing dealing with the laws of Shechitah.
At the beginning of the second page, a title: "Pa[rashat] Miketz, belongs to the well-known genius Zerach Eidelitz". The discussion begins with a quote from the Talmud, Berachot tractate about enabling a child to join a Zimun. Then the discussion turns to enabling a slave join a Zimun. On the side of the fourth page there is a scholarly handwritten gloss in different ink, maybe by another writer. It should be noted, that several lines seem to have been written by a different writer; however, the three pages are a consecutive halachic discussion by Rabbi Zercha Eidelitz.
Here are added two attached leaves that were most likely attached to the aforementioned leaves. At the beginning of these leaves, there is a title "by the above genius". Here too, the handwriting is of Rabbi Bezalel Ronsburg. We understand that "the above genius" us Rabbi Zerach Eidelitz, whos enovellae was presented in the former leaves. The present leaves contain a discussion of a Sugiya from the Shabbat tractate and a novellae on Shtei Ha'Lechem. The end of the novellae is missing.
18.5x21 cm.
Rabbi Zerach was known as a Darshan and pleasant preacher, as can be seen in his book 'Or La'Yesharim' which contains the sermons he delivered in the synagogue of Prague. However, the novellae before us reflects his true spiritual stature and the reason why he was a member of the Beit Din of the 'Noda Bi'Yehuda' in Prague. In the approbation by the 'Noda Bi'Yehuda' of the book 'Or La'Yesharim', he describes Rabbi Zerach "who taught Torah all his life in a sharp and knowledgeable manner and had many disciples and who was a sharp scholar of Halacha and Tosfot".
The copyist, Rabbi Bezalel Ronsburg (1762-1821) was one of the prominent rabbis of Prague. A leding dicisple of the 'Noda Bi'Yehuda'. Many of his compositions and novellae were lost; yet, recently, his composition "Chochmat Bezalel – Pitchei Nidah" and his responsa were printed. His glosses on the Talmud were printed in the edition of the Talmud that was printed in Prague and later in Vilnius. Hic commentary on the Rosh, titled "Sdeh Tzufim" was also printed in editions of the Talmud.
Condition: Good. The margins of the leaves are worn and torn.
