EINSTEIN ALBERT: (1879-1955) German-born Theoretical Physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1921. Lower portion of a T.L.S., A. Einstein, one page, oblong 8vo (evidently originally 4to), n.p. (Paris?), n.d. (late 1920s?), to an unidentified individual, in French. The seven lines of text refer to the anarchists Sacco and Vanzetti and states, in part, 'we know enough how deep the feelings of fairness are among the American people to hope that a new denial of justice will not be accomplished. Would he want for many years to come, to carry the same burden of anguish and remorse which weighs on France following the Dreyfus affair?', concluding that they hope Charlotte's verdict will not confirm this. Einstein's signature appears as a countersignature alongside those of Jacques Hadamard (1865-1963) French Mathematician and the main author of the original letter, Leon Brunschvicg (1869-1944) French Idealist Philosopher and Lucien Levy-Bruhl (1857-1939) French Scholar. An unusual fragment and grouping of signatures with interesting associations. Some creasing, largely to the left edge, and with some extensive foxing, only slightly affecting the signatures and text, G The Italian immigrant anarchists Nicola Sacco (1891-1927) and Bartolomeo Vanzetti (1888-1927) were controversially convicted of murder during an armed robbery in Massachusetts in April 1920. Many celebrated writers, academics, and artists, including Albert Einstein, pleaded for their pardon or a new trial as details of the men's suspected innocence became known, however a commission upheld the verdict and seven years later Sacco and Vanzetti were executed by electric chair at Charlestown State Prison. Jacques Hadamard was a staunch supporter of Jewish causes and became politically active following the Dreyfus Affair which involved him personally as his second cousin Lucie was the wife of Alfred Dreyfus.
