A RUSSIAN GOLD AND ENAMEL JETON FOR A TRANSCAUCASIAN WARRIOR, C. 1906
A commemorative Russian gold and enamel badge for the Battle of Bajazet dated 1856 - 1906.
The badge is executed as a shield surmounted by an Imperial crown. The obverse features a cross with two swords. The cross has a cypher of AII on the top arm, "FOR THE SERVICE ON CAUCASUS" on the left and right arms, and 1864 on the bottom arm. The reverse features a pair of Russian Army gold and enamel shoulder boards with the regimental numbers: 20/3K and two gold numbers "50" for the 50th anniversary. The shield in the center represents BaJazet. The gold ribbon on the top of the shield says: "FOR THE WAR OF CAUCASUS".
The war between the Russian and Ottoman empires began in April 1877, and since it was fought for the liberation of the oppressed peoples of the Balkans, the main theater of operations was in the southeast of Europe. The Caucasian front was a secondary front, where Russian troops acted to ensure the security of its territory and the diversion of Turkish forces from the main direction.
On June 18, 1877, during the Russo-Turkish War, there began a heroic 23-day defense by a small Russian detachment of the fortress of Bajazet, completely unprepared for defense, which was important for both enemies, primarily for moral reasons.
