The Admor Rabbi Shmuel Shmelke Halevi Horowitz of Nikolsburg (1726-1778) was among the early Chassidic masters. He was called by the title “The Rebbe Reb Shmelke” by Chassidim around the world. In his youth, he studied the entire Shas and all of Poskim together with his eminent brother, the Baal Hafla’ah, and soon became a close disciple of the Maggid of Mezritch, traveling together with his brother to seek the Maggid’s wisdom. In 1775, he became Rabbi of Nikolsburg and all of Moravia. His disciples include the illustrious Chassidic masters Rabbi Moshe Leib of Sassov, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev, the Kozhnitzer Maggid, the Chozeh of Lublin, the Riminover, and Rabbi Mordechai Banet who succeeded him as Rabbi of Nikolsburg.

The list of actions and customs that Rabbi Shmuel Shmelke enumerates in this sefer cast an awe-inspiring glimpse upon the Admor’s illustrious spiritual stature and unparalleled sanctity, as well as the immense caution he displayed in every matter pertaining to sanctity and cleaving to Hashem.
