Midrash halachah from the houses of study of the Tannaim, on Chumashim Bamidbar and Devarim.
This first edition of Sifri was printed by the famed Italian printer Daniel Bomberg.
The source of the midrashim included in the sefer are the batei medrash of Rabbi Yishmael and Rabbi Akiva. The Gemara (Sanhedrin 86a) relates that the teachings in Sifri were transmitted to future generations from the beis medrash of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai (see Iggeres Rav Shrira Gaon).
This sefer contains numerous amendments and annotations until leaf 33. The style of these amendments was typical in Egypt in the time of Rabbi Betzalel Ashknazi, it appears that the scribe was editing the sefer from an additional manuscript.
