Beautiful Machzor Amsterdam, 1750 with Selichos, 4 volumes.
Engraved gilded elaborate Amsterdam bindings

Four volumes in leather-bound wooden bindings, featuring large, impressive engravings and original clasps. The bindings are the work of the illustrious Propes family, and the verso of each volume feature a gilded engraving of the family emblem depicting a shield bordering the family flag “Yedei Kohein (hands of the Kohein)”, with the name Propes engraved below. Atop the shield are two angels bearing the “kesser kehunah (crown of the priests)”.

The same symbol is engraved on the front jacket of each volume, engraved in the center with the inscription: “Meir ben P.V.K.H. [philanthropist and director and honored rabbi] Gumpel Kliff.” Presumably, the printers gifted this set to the said Rabbi Meir Kliff.

These artistic covers display the striking, elaborate masterpieces of 18th century Amsterdam printers.

Description: Machzorim for Rosh Hashanah and Shalosh Regalim with commentary, halachos and customs in Yiddish. The Machzorim were printed in Amsterdam, 1750; and the volume of Selichos in 1720.

Kavanas Hapaytan

This is the first edition of machzorim printed with the famous Kavanas Hapaytan commentary. In this machzor, every piyyut is preceded with a brief introduction to the content of the piyyut. This addition to the machzor became very popular and was eventually introduced into many future editions.
Each of the four volumes includes an approbation by Rabbi Aryeh Leib, Av Beis Din of Amsterdam, in the flyleaf. In his approbation, he extols the innovative concept of Kavanas Hapaytan. Rabbi Aryeh Leib was a son-in-law of the Chacham Tzvi and father of Rabbi Shaul of Amsterdam.

Vol. 1: Rosh Hashanah: [1], 29: 12: 100 leaves.
Vol. 2: Succos: [1], 29: 12: 109 leaves.
Vol. 3: Pesach & Shavuos: [1], 29: 12: 111: 72 leaves.

This set includes 4 volumes in their original ornate leather bindings with gilded engravings. This original first edition is exceedingly rare.
Machzor Kavanas Hapaytan (Amsterdam, 1750) and Selichos (Amsterdam, 1720). Propes Press. First Edition. Page size: 24 cm. Four impressive volumes preserved in a new case.
