Sefer Beer Mayim Chaim was described by the Apter Rav “all its words are sweeter than honey” and his teachings are “flames of a holy fire” that guide a Jew in avodas Hashem and the path of Torah and Chassidus. Replete with foundations of Chassidus, the sefer Beer Mayim Chaim swiftly earned its place of honor in the Jewish library and is regarded as one of the classic Chassidic works.

The Admor Rabbi Chaim of Czernowitz (1760-1818), author of Be’er Mayim Chaim and Sidduro shel Shabbos, was among the progenitors of Chassidus and a genius in both the Revealed and Hidden Torah.

Rabbi Chaim acquired Torah and wisdom from the holy Admor Rabbi Yechiel Michel of Zlotchov. He served as Rav in the prominent communities of Czernowitz, Botoshan, Mohyliv, and Kishinev in Romania, and was one of the preeminent disseminators of Chassidus in Romania and Bukovina. In 1813, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of traveling to Eretz Yisrael where he settled in Tzfas and dwelled until his passing five years later.

After the author’s passing, the manuscript of this sefer was dispatched from Tzfas to the Admor Rabbi Mordechai of Kremnitz, son of the Admor Rabbi Yechiel Michel of Zlotchov, who was the Rabbi Chaim of Czernowitz’s Rebbe.

In his approbation to the sefer, the Admor Rabbi Mordechai of Kremnitz writes, “When the manuscripts arrived… I accepted this task upon myself, and I gave them to be copied and edited… [as a result of] the sweet love and friendship of my father the holy, pious and famous Admor…Moreinu Harav Yechiel Michel ztvk”l to him, as he loved him and cherished him greatly…with an eternal love.”

The title pages of all five volumes bear the publishing date 1820, it seems that this was done in order to avoid the censors, and it is unclear exactly when each sefer was printed. The first volume to be printed was Sefer Shmos (see printer’s notes on leaf 37b) in 1818 (see approbation of Rabbi Mordechai of Kremnitz), and the other volumes were printed in Sedilkov between the years 1820-1825.
