Handwritten & Autographed Letter of Blessing by Rabbi Eliezer Zussman Sofer to His Son Rabbi Yosef Leib. Paks, 1898

A handwritten and autographed letter replete with blessings and congratulatory words by Rabbi Eliezer Zussman Sofer, Av Beis Din of Paks and author of Yalkut Eliezer to his son Rabbi Yosef Leib Sofer, Av Beis Din of Derecske. The letter was written in honor of the publication of his son’s sefer Yalkut Sofer on Sefer Vayikra (Paks, 1898).
In the letter, the father writes, “[I] come with joy and blessings of mazal tov, for I have received Sefer Vayikra… May you merit blessing upon its completion… May Hashem Yisborach be with us in the merit of our forefathers, to elevate the glory of Torah…”

Later in the letter, the Yalkut Eliezer makes a point regarding the sefer and relates that his wife had recently fallen from the roof of their home, “and you can surely imagine the pain and alarm.”

“The Sofer family is the famous, illustrious Rabbanim of Hungary, ” writes the Admor of Shinova in his approbation to the Yalkut Sofer on Shmos.

Rabbi Eliezer Zussman Sofer (1825-1903) was Av Beis Din of Paks and author of Yalkut Eliezer and other famous sefarim. A venerable Hungarian sage and disciple of the Chasam Sofer, he was born in Pressburg and circumcised by the Chasam Sofer himself who taught him in his youth, although he absorbed the bulk of his Torah knowledge and wisdom from the Ksav Sofer and Maharam Schick. In 1886, he succeeded his father-in-law as Rav and Av Beis Din of Paks, Hungary, filling these noteworthy positions until his passing in 1903. He authored the 3-volume Yalkut Eliezer, Sefer Hamakneh and others.

In the margins of the letter is a personal handwritten note from his son Rabbi Shmuel Binyamin Sofer (1873-1943). The latter authored Divrei Sofrim and succeeded his brother Rabbi Yosef Leib Sofer as Rav and Av Beis Din of Derecske.

Paks, 1898. Postcard with postmarks from the cities of Paks and Derecske. Good condition.
