Foundational Sefer on Emunah.
Sefer Ha’ikarim with Eitz Shasul Commentary. Venice, 1618
Includes rare additional leaves.

The Foundational Principles of Judaism by Rabbi Yosef Albo with the commentary of Rabbi Gedalyah Lipshitz’s Eitz Shasul.

Rabbi Albo bases the Jewish belief on three principles of faith: The existence of G-d, the fact that Torah is from Heaven, and the concept of reward and punishment.
Eitz Shasul is the primary commentary on Sefer Ikarim.

Most known copies include just 144 leaves while this edition has 146. The last two leaves include the post-printing writings of Rabbi Gedalyah which were added to just a few copies.

Rabbi Yosef Albo (circa 1380-1444) from spain was a  disciple of Rabbi Chasdai Crescas, author of Ohr Hashem and disciple of the Ran. In his sefer, Rabbi Albo bases the principles of Judaism on three beliefs (as opposed to the Rambam’s Thirteen Principles of Faith): The existence of Hashem, Torah from Heaven, and ‘reward and punishment. The sefer was written in response to the Spanish pogroms of 1391, when Jews were forcibly converted to Christianity. Here the author attempts to strengthen their emunah.

Rabbi Gedalyah Lipshitz was a relative of the Maharam of Lublin. At this time, he was in Venice overseeing the publishing of the Maharam’s chiddushim on Shas, as well as the sefer of his teshuvos. He moved to Eretz Yisrael and was later dispatched as a Rabbinical emissary by the sages of Yerushalayim to raise money for the Yishuv (see Shluchei Eretz Yisrael p. 268).

Includes very important approbations by the Maharshah, Maharam of Lublin, Shlah Hakadosh and Kli Yakar.

Venice, 1618. First edition with commentary of Eitz Shasul. 146 leaves. Page size: 28.5 cm.  Minor stains. Light restoration to margins of title page and last leaf. Beautiful new half leather binding.
