Dalí Doubled invites and provides a reconsideration of Dali's work. The fruit of over ten years of research by Dr. William Jeffett. Chief Curator (Exhibitions), it reevaluates Dali's position to other Surrealists, to the post-war contexts of art within which Dalí worked, and it examines his continued significance to types and topics of art now being made. That this reconsideration has the dimension of a "recovery, " as William Jeffett calls it, indicates the recognition that the last era's understanding of Dali was insufficient. We know Dali's work to have been consistently responsive to the cultural and intellectual impulses of the six decades of his productivity. exemplary of new forms, and predictive of a new vision of the artist, yet the corpus of writing about him does not acknowledge this. Thus we need to structure a new understanding of Dalí. Reconsideration is a process that once begun is not bracketed in time. As Anne d'Harnoncourt reflected on the Philadelphia Museum of Art's centennial exhibition of Dalí, who recalled Dali as a guest of her father in her childhood house, "Every era has its own Dalí." There will no doubt be further reconsiderations of his work and repositioning of his place in art and cultural history.
