LEV MEKHLIS
(1889 - 1953) Soviet politician and high commander of the Red Army from 1937 to 1940. He was one of the main Stavka representatives during World War II who was responsible for five to seven Soviet fronts. Typed document, a request to place the first secretary of the Communist Party of a Ukrainian district, Grigori Kletsov, to a high ranking position in the Red Army, signed by the Head of Personnel Department, Division Commissar Popov and the Assistant Head of Personnel Department, Regimental Commissar Romanov, two pages, October 22, 1939. Inscribed in dark-blue ink, in part: 'They insistently ask to send him to the Cavalry and, preferably, to Eastern Ukraine.' Mekhlis writes on the first page: (to place in the position) head of the political department of a cavalry division. Mekhlis 11/XI (November 11)'.
