Die Juden in der Karikatur - A comprehensive and preliminary publication on the phenomenon of anti-Semitism in Europe, Munich 1921 - nice copy

Die Juden in der Karikatur - The Jews in Caricature - A monumental study that examines the phenomenon of anti-Semitism in all its forms in European literature and journalism from the beginning of printing, by Edward Fuchs, Munich 1921. Fuchs compiled a long list of anti-Semitic illustrations that became a valuable asset in the study of the phenomenon of anti-Semitism in general until today. With its first publication, the world was shocked by the proliferation of anti-Semitic caricatures that appeared in European literature, their intensity, and their destructive power. Its publication led to extensive engagement with the phenomenon as early as the 1920s. The book was published one year before the appearance of the Nazi "Der Sturmer", and many of the caricatures in it were used by the Nazis to intensify their hatred against the Jews.

The author brings in the book hundreds of colorful anti-Semitic illustrations alongside black and white ones, starting with those that appeared in classical Christian literature from the Middle Ages that accompanied the writings of John Chrysostom, such as the engraving of the famous Trent Blood Libel (Germany, 1475), the 'Jewish sow' illustration by Martin Luther, showing Jews drinking the milk and blood of a pig - from the end of the 15th century, accompanied by the Jewish usurer caricature that appeared in countless forms over the past centuries. The book also includes many illustrations that appeared in German anti-Semitic literature and in the free press of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the 'Wandering Jew', caricatures that were published during the Dreyfus affair, and many more. On the cover, there is a caricature depicting the 'Wandering Jew' by Gustave Doré, which was published in a book in 1852.
