  • Seafaring Scandinavians, aka 'Vikings', used iolite as a navigational aid.  Sailors could determine the exact location of the sun during heavy fog by peering through the gemstone.
  • Iolite’s beautiful violet-to-blue hue is due to the presence of iron in its structure. It has been confused for sapphire.
