Bobo People, Burkina Faso: Crest mask featuring the figure of a hyena. Carved wood decorated with pigments, late 19th century. The hyena represents one of the protective bush spirits. Highly skilled dancers wear such masks at ceremonies, which include initiations, harvests and funerals.
