About the editor:

Dr. Chaim Zhitlovsky (April 19, 1865 – May 6, 1943) was a Russian-born Jewish writer, journalist, revolutionary and socialist politician, the central thinker of radical Yiddishism.

In 1908 he participated in the Chernivtsi Conference, and was one of the leaders there speaking against Zionism and against the Hebrew language. He dreamed of establishing a "Yiddish state", meaning an independent Jewish political entity, without marked borders, based on Yiddish culture.

Zhitlovsky arrived in Israel in the summer of 1914, shortly after the height of the 'language war'. As part of his struggles against Hebrew and for Yiddish, he initiated a lecture on Yiddish, which was scheduled to take place in Tel Aviv on the evening of Saturday, July 5. The people of Hapoel Hatza'ir opposed his intention, and a group of Hebrew seekers, gathered from the nearby colonies and from among the boys of the Herzliya Gymnasium, went to his place of stay to convince him to cancel the lecture. The attempt was unsuccessful, and it was decided to prevent his lecture by force. At the height of the confrontation, a gun was also pulled out and a shot was fired, with no casualties (the shot was apparently fired in the air). For some time, the Hebrew seekers clashed with the Yiddish people, and the commotion calmed down only late at night, with the intervention of Haim Bogarshov, the director of the gymnasium.

על העורך:

ד"ר חיים ז'יטלובסקי (19 באפריל 1865 – 6 במאי 1943) היה סופר, עיתונאי, מהפכן ופוליטיקאי סוציאליסטי יהודי יליד רוסיה, ההוגה המרכזי של היידישיזם הרדיקלי.

בשנת 1908 השתתף בועידת צ'רנוביץ, והיה שם אחד מראשי המדברים נגד הציונות ונגד העברית. הוא חלם על הקמת "מדינת יידיש", כלומר ישות מדינית יהודית עצמאית, ללא גבולות מסומנים, הנשענת על תרבות היידיש.

ז'יטלובסקי הגיע לארץ ישראל בקיץ 1914, מעט אחרי שיאה של 'מלחמת השפות'. במסגרת מאבקיו נגד העברית ולמען היידיש הוא יזם הרצאה על היידיש, שנועדה להתקיים בתל אביב בערב שבת ה-5 ביולי. אנשי הפועל הצעיר התנגדו לכוונתו זו, וקבוצה של שוחרי עברית, שהתאספו מהמושבות הסמוכות ומקרב נערי הגימנסיה הרצליה, הלכו למקום שהותו כדי לשכנע אותו לבטל את ההרצאה. הניסיון לא צלח, והוחלט למנוע את הרצאתו בכוח. בשיא העימות נשלף גם אקדח ונורתה ירייה, ללא נפגעים (היריה נורתה כנראה באוויר). משך זמן מה התעמתו שוחרי העברית מול אנשי היידיש, והמהומה נרגעה רק מאוחר בלילה, בהתערבות חיים בוגרשוב, מנהל הגימנסיה.
