Three volumes of 'The History of Nature' with drawings, some in color! - by 'Shalom Aleichem' - signatures of famous personalities
natural history. Translated into Hebrew by Shalom Yaakov Abramowitz ('Shalom Aleichem'). with the drawing boards.
Volume I: Mammals. Leipzig, 1862.
On the inside of the cover is the signature of Shlomo Anschbacher, it is very possible that he is Rabbi Shlomo Anschbacher, the founder and first rabbi of the Adat Yisrael congregation in Nuremberg.
At the end of the volume were printed 7 pages (printed on one side) containing dozens of wonderful drawings, in color (!) of mammals. These paintings are of interest not only because of their beauty, and the changes of the animals from those we know today, but also because of their ancient-biblical names that were accepted at the time the book was printed. For example, the zebra is called 'pereh', the giraffe: the camel leopard, the hayena - Arabian wolf, orang-utang "woodland man", the spur - "summer pig", and so on...
The front cover and with it some pages are detached from the rest of the book. as well as the back cover and with it some pages detached from the body of the volume. The spine is missing. Other than that the situation is good.
Volume II: The Chicken. Zitamir (Shadow print), 1867.
On the second cover of the book, signature: "C. Lonsky, Vilna" (also appears at the end of the book). And his stamp appears on the first cover (also appears inside the book and at the end). Chaikal Lonsky was a Yiddish and Hebrew writer, a Jewish-Lithuanian bibliographer, the librarian of the Strashon Library for many years, and a historian of Vilna's Jewry. Perished in the Holocaust.
Another signature in tiny writing: "מספר אא שקאלסקי, וילנה-פריז, ד' תמוז ע"ג".
At the end of the volume, 'notes' were printed, including discussions on identifying the names of animals in the Bible and in the Hebrew language. Very interesting material. On one of the pages, a handwritten theoretical note, in pencil. After that, a key board of the names of the birds mentioned in the book was printed.
Missing front cover and spine. Many time stains. The front page is loose. Detached front cover.
Volume III: The Reptiles. Vilna, 1873.
Includes a cover on a dark page, front and back.
At the end of the volume there are seven pages of plates with drawings of the animals mentioned in the book, all in their entirety.
Signature on the front page: "Noah Natkin".
Good condition. Reasonable wear and tear.
