First Edition of Tur Even HaEzer, with Beit Yosef, in the Lifetime of Maran the Beis Yosef With Handwritten Hagahot Bedek Habayit that have not been Published!

Tur Beit Yosef, Even HaEzer - Savinita, 1553 - the first edition that was printed in Maran the Beis Yosef's lifetime - copying of the glosses by the Beis Yosef from his book Bedek Habayit, handwritten by the Gaon Rabbi David Gershon Av Beis Din of Rashid, one of the leading rabbis of Egypt in the 17th century

Incomplete copy

In 1606, the book Bedek Habayit by Maran the Beis Yosef was published for the first time in Venice containing glosses and many additions by him to his great book the Beit Yosef. The book was not well-known in the first dozens of years after it was published (see the Chida in his book Shem Hagedolim). Only many years later did the printers add his words in their appropriate place in the Beit Yosef.

In this copy, all the glosses from the book Bedek Habayit were hand-copied by the great Gaon Rabbi David Gershon Av Beis Din of Rashid, integrated into their proper place.

Some of the glosses copied in this volume do not appear in the printed version of the Bedek habayit. In addition, in some of these glosses, there are lines that do not appear in the printed version of the glosses. There is no telling whether Rabbi David Gershon copied the glosses from a manuscript (or parts of a manuscript) of the Bedek Habayit, the glosses thus being attributed to Maran the Beis Yosef or whether these glosses are Rabbi David Gershon's own innovations.

See, for example, the glosses on leaf 209a.

The great Gaon Rabbi David Gershon (1615 ? - 1700), one of the leading rabbis of Egypt. Served as Av Beis Din of Rashid (65 km. from Alexandria).

3-4, 7-20, 22-229 leaves. The following leaves are missing: 1-2, 5-6, 21, 230-232 (a total of 8 leaves from the beginning and end of the book). 31 cm. Fair condition. Dampness stains. Wear. Moth marks.
