Pri Etz Chaim, I-[II], which is Sha'ar Hakavanot by Rabbi Chaim Vital. The press of Johann Anton Kruger, Koretz, [1782]. Rare.


[2], 118 leaves. 32 cm. On the title page, the signature of Rabbi Raphael Hertz Kahana Shapiro and a stamp of Rabbi Yeshaya Horowitz, Rav and Moreh Tzeddek of Kollel Chassidei Safed. With an approbation by Rabbi Chaim of Sanz and more. 

The foreword and first section, up to Sha'ar Haslichot, were published in a previous edition edited by Rabbi Nosson Shapiro titled Me'orot Natan. The second section is the first branch of Sefer Etz Chaim edited by Rabbi Meir Poppers. 


Rabbi Raphael Hertz Kahana Shapiro - managed (with his son Rabbi Aharon Shlomo) a printery in Krakow during the years 1802-1822. In his old age, served as Rav, apparently as Av Beis Din of Pshemishel. His brother, Rabbi Yechiel Asher Kahana Shapiro, was Av Beis Din of Zelin.


Rabbi Yeshaya ben Rabbi Asher Yechezkel Halevi Horowitz (1883-1978) a descendant of the families of the Tzemach Tzeddek of Lubavitch, Rabbi Aharon of Karlin and Rabbi Chaim Chaikeh of Amdor, and son-by-son until the Shelah Hakadosh. Was a disciple of Rabbi Doberish Ziman of Warsaw and rhe Gaon the Ridbaz, from whom he received his Hora'ah Semicha. Since 1908, served as Rav of the Chabad community of Safed. In 1922, served as Rav of the Chabad community of New York and since 1923, served as Rav of Winnipeg, Canada. Author of Shut and sermon books as well as a book on the history of the Jewish community of Safed. 


Renewed semi-leather binding. Stains. Moth holes. Folds to the corners of the leaves. Taping to the edges of the first leaves. Fair condition.
