Rare Letter by the Parnas Rabbi Wolf of Vienna to the Leaders of the Prague Community, about the payment of Taxes to the Government, Vienna - 1753

Rare and historical letter! A secret letter by the Parnas Rabbi Wolf of Vienna to Rabbi Enzil Elfoigin, one of the leaders of the Prague community. About taxes to the government. Vienna - 1753.

Before us is a rare and interesting item revealing the Jewish life in the countries of central Europe, the generation of the Geonim the Nodah BiYehuda, Rabbi Yaakov Hamburger (author of Kol Yaakov), Rabbi Mordechai Benet and more.

In the letter (which was written in Yiddish on Isru Chag Shavu'ot 1753) the well-known Parnas Rabbi Wolf appeals to the Gaon Rabbi Enzil Elfoigin, one of the leaders of the Prague community who was close to the Nodah BiYehuda and tells him that he has heard that the Rabbi of Nikolsburg Rabbi Yissachar Ber Eshkeles (the son-in-law of the renowned Rabbi Shimshon Vertheimer, the court Jew of many contemporary European kings) asked the government before his passing that the taxes of the Jews of Hungary, Bohemia, Moravia and Shlezia will be sent to him and he will be in charge of them. The bottom line of all the above is that the Prague community (which is in Moravia) will report from now on to the Rabbi of Nikolsburg and his representatives. Rabbi Wolf pleads that the Parnasim of Prague do everything they can before it is too late and not reveal his name.
