Or Hachaim Hakadosh - First Edition, Venice 1742 Copy of the Arugos Habosem and His Descendants
Chumash Vayikra with the commentary of Or Hachaim Hakadosh - Venice 1742 - the first edition that was published by the holy author on his way to Eretz Yisroel - pedigreed copy which was studied by the rabbis of the Greenwald family, with their signatures: the Arugos Habosem, the Vayaged Yaakov and the Vayechi Yosef.
On the front guard leaf, a signature of the author of the Vayaged Yaakov Av Beis Din of Tzehlim and Papa - "Yaakov Yechezkel Greenwald".
In addition, signatures, ownership notations and many pen trials, in pen and pencil, of the rabbis of the Greenwald family: "Moshe Greenwald" [=the author of Arugot Haboesm); his son, Rabbi Yaakov Yechizkiya, the author of Vayaged Yaakov; and of his son's son, Rabbi Yosef Greenwald, the author of Vayechi Yosef.
On a leaf mounted on the back board, a signature: "משהק' גרוו"א" [= משה הקטן גרינוואלד, the author of the Arugot Habosem].
On the back guard leaf, ownership notation of the Vayaged Yaakov: "כ"ק אדמו"ר הרה"ג אבדק"ק הועדין [= הוניאד] תע"א ומלפנים בק"ק צהעלים".

The rabbis of the Greenwald family were famed for their study of the Or Hachaim Hakadosh and it is cited many times in their holy books on the Torah: Arugot Habosem, Vayaged Yaakov and Vayechi Yosef.
The Chida, who was a leading disciple of the Or Hachiam Hakadosh, in his book Shem Hagedolim, writes: "פירוש התורה להרב המופלא חסידא קדישא מ' חיים ן' עטר, ונדפס בוויניציא סביב לחומש עם תרגום ורש"י. ושמענו כי עתה בפולוניא הם מחשיבים אותו הרבה, ונדפס עוד שני פעמים. ונתעורר זה ע"י שהרב החסיד קדוש מהר"י בעל שם טוב הגיד גדולת נשמת מהר"ח הנזכר" (Ma'arechet Sefarim. 1, 54).
The holy Rav of Ruzhin said that studying the Or Hachaim purifies the soul and his son, the holy Rav of Chortekov, said that ever since he heard what his father had said, he began a weekly study of the Or Hachaim on the Parasha. Rabbi Pinchas of Koretz stated that he was the one who publicized the book in the world: "שפעם אחת היה בק"ק טשערין, ואמר: אני רואה בעיר אור גדול, ושאל אם נמצא שם ספר אור החיים, ונמצא שם ביד אחד חומש עם אור החיים, והוא האיר על כל העיר... ופעם אחת חלה בנו של הרב ז"ל (רבי פנחס), וקיבל על עצמו ללמוד בכל יום דף מהאור החיים בחומשים הגדולים..." (Imrei Pinchas Hashalem, I, p. 281).
The author, the holy Gaon Rabbeinu Chaim Ben Atar (1696-1743) the Or Hachaim Hakadosh, was a Moroccan sage. On his way to Eretz Yisroel, he lived for several years in Livorno, Italy, where he finished writing the Or Hachaim (on Tu BeAv 1741). The manuscript was then sent to Venice to be printed (in early 1742).
His disciple, the Chida, wrote about his Rav in Shem Hagedolim: "מוהר"ר חיים ן' עטר, עיר וקדיש מק"ק סאלי, ובא לעה"ק ירושלים ת"ו סוף שנת תק"ב. ואני הצעיר זכיתי והייתי בישיבתו הרמתה, ועיני ראו גדולת תורתו, עוקר הרי הרים, וקדושתו הפלא ופלא. ולפי דורנו היה לב הרב מבעית בתלמוד, והיה כמעיין המתגבר... ובחדש תמוז תק"ג עלה לשמים בן מ"ז שנה זלה"ה. וחיבר "חפץ ה'", "ראשון לציון", "אור החיים", "פרי תאר", וחכמתו ניכרת מספריו, אך זה אחד מעשרה מחכמתו ורוחב לבו, וחורפתו הפלא ופלא, וחופף עליו כל היום סדר קדושה והבדלה מעניני העה"ז, ורבו עזוז נוראותיו..."
The holy Gaon Rabbi Moshe Greenwald author of Arugot HaBosem [1853-1910] one of the greatest Rabbis and Poskim of Hungary, the leading disciple of Maran the Kesav Sofer in Pressburg, the disciple of the greatest disciples of the Chasam Sofer the holy Gaon Rabbi Menachem Katz and his grandfather Rabbi Yosef Greenwald. Since his youth, he became tied to Chassidus and would travel to the holy Tzaddikim of Belz and Shinava. Was the Rav of the renowned communities of Homno and Kleinwardein until he became the Rav and leader of Chust. In his days, the Chust yeshiva became the largest and most important yeshiva in Hungary, with many students from all over the world including the USA joining it to study Torah and Yirah from its great Rav.
His son, the holy Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Yechizkiya Greenwald author of Vayaged Yaakov [1882-1941]. Served as Av Beis Din of several important Hungarian communities, including Papa (since 1929) where he served until his passing in 1941. In Papa, he headed a large and important yeshiva.
The famed Tzaddik Gaon Rabbi Yosef Greenwald author of Vayechi Yosef of Pápa [1903-1984], the Rav and leader of Pápa, Hungary. The son of the holy Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Yechizkiya the son of Rabbeinu the author of Arugos Habosem. After his marriage, he was appointed Dayan in Satmar beneath his uncle and teacher the holy Gaon Rabbi Eliezer David of Satmar. He headed the 'Keren LeDavid' yeshiva in Satmar. After the Holocaust, he established the Pápa community. Was renowned for his piety and genius and many were saved by his blessings.
