'Physicians have Decided to Take Me Out of the Library' The Last Responsum Handwritten by the Great Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Eiger - Special Autograph!
'יען הכריעוני לפנות מחדר הספרים למדור התחתון לבל אמשך אחר העיון' The ךast רesponsum יandwritten by the Great Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Eiger, Rabbi Akiva Eiger's son - shortly before his passing, on matters of Treifot.
Lengthy responsum, 2 handwritten pages, with many glosses handwritten by the Great Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Eiger, and with lengthy lines in the last passage handwritten and signed by him.
This is the last responsum that was sent by Maran the Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Eiger and survived to this day. At the beginning of the responsum, Rabbeinu Shlomo Eiger refers to his deteriorating health, noting that his physicians forbade him to study:
'ידי אסורות מהרבות במכתב כי נרפים הם אחרי קומי ממיטתי ורב מהיות עורך שניים או שלושה מכתבים ליום, על כן נתבוששה תשובתי עד עתה, גם כיום לא למעשה אף לא להלכה אני משיב, כי כל לימודים עיוניים עצורים לי מפקודת הרופאים אשר חזקה עלי, גם הכל לפני כספר החתום יען הכריעוני לפנות מחדר הספרים למדור התחתון לבל אמשך אחר העיון, ואך למען בל יפלו פני מעלתו לחשוב כי יוקל בעיני מלעבור על דבריו, ואשא ואתן בהם במשקל [במושכל ] הראשון'.
The responsum was written in Posen, in Chshvan 1851, several months before his passing, on two pages of a leaf with an autographic signature of Rabbi Shlomo Eiger. According to Shut Rabbi Shlomo Eiger, this is the last known responsum by Rabbeinu - and this is his last known signature!
The last passage was also handwritten by him, summarizing the evidence and adding to what he had dictated. There are also many glosses and corrections, all handwritten by him. The document is numbered 22-612 and was printed in Shut Rabbeini Shlomo Eiger Yoreh Deah Siman 12 with variations.
The great Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Eiger [1777-1852] the son and successor of his great father the Gaon Rabbi Akiva Eiger. The Rav of Posen and Kalisch. His books Shut Rabbi Shlomo Eiger, Sefer HaIkarim and Gilayon Maharsha are inalienable assets.
A single lead, handwritten and at its end a lengthy passage handwritten by Rabbi Shlomo Eiger. Glosses handwritten by him and his full signature. Lines erased by the Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Eiger. Notation of 'הועתק' (copied). Slight wear. Good condition.
