Autograph letter by R. Meir Shapiro of Lublin to the Bais Din of Lublin, imploring them to retain control of the local Shechita industry which should not be handed over to other parties. He writes this is important for “Toivas Ha’Das” as well as for the dignity of the Rabbinate. Control of communal Schechita has unfortunately often been the cause of considerable disagreements, with disgruntled parties commonly arguing that communal restrictions are driven by financial interests. R. Meir Schapiro held strongly that under no circumstances should Shechita be overseen by any entity besides the Bais Din.
R. Meir Schapiro (1887-1933), was known as a child prodigy and referred to as the Illui of Shotz. He served as Rav of Galina, Sanock, Pietrekow and finally Lublin. He founded Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin which became the flagship Yeshiva of Poland and initiated the Daf Ha’Yomi program which is learned by tens of thousands to this day.
