The complete writings of the philosopher Seneca. The book contains three impressive engravings after works by the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) – Portrait of Seneca (bust); Death of Seneca (signed in the plate by the engraver, Cornelis Galle); portrait of the philologist and humanist Justus Lipsius (signed in the plate by the engraver, Cornelis Galle). Engraved title page.
Hand inscription, in Latin, to one of the blank leaves in the beginning of the book, in which the year 1633 in noted. Among the book's leaves appears a leaf in early handwriting (Latin).
[16], XXXVI, 893, [5] pp. 38.5 cm. Fine vellum binding, with gilt decorations and four cloth bands for tying. Good overall condition. Stains, some are dampstains. Dark stains to top margins of first leaves (including the title page engraving and the portrait of Justus Lipsius). Slight creases and defects. Some tears. Defects, stains and small tears to binding.
