Collection of Postcards – The Karaites Town Çufut Qale in the Crimean Peninsula
19 postcards with photographs of the Karaites town Çufut Qale, in the Crimean peninsula. Different publishers in Bakhchysarai, Yalta, Sebastopol and more towns, [first decades of the 20th century].
The postcards depict the ruins of the ghost town Çufut Qale in the Crimean peninsula which served as the center of Crimean Karaites until the end of the 19th century. Until 1783, when the Crimean peninsula was conquered by the Russian Empire, the Karaites were not allowed to settle in the Crimean capital and this is why they settled in this town. Avraham Firkovich, one of the Karaite community leaders in East Europe, was one of the last Karaites who lived in this town. Early in the 20th century the town was totally deserted as is seen in these postcards.
Four postcards are undivided.
14X9 cm. Good condition. Some stains. One postcard was used.
