Josephus Flavius - Antiquities of the Jews. London 1737 - with the Rare Map

The Genuine works of Flavius Josephus the Jewish Historian London 1737, with the rare map of the Land of Israel - copper engraving by William Whiston, 1667-1752, and engravings at the beginnings of the chapters. Two title pages.

Chronicles of the Jewish people by Josephus Flavius, English edition. A map of the Land of Israel by William Whiston is at the beginning of the book, with indication of tribal inheritances. An index of place names is at the left, with an indication of longitude and latitude lines for locating the places on the map. A note to readers from the author is on the right, regarding changes introduced in this map compared to the maps of Adrian Ryland, Henry Maundrell and Andreas Cellarius. Illustration of an ancient shekel coin from both sides on the bottom of the map.

Whiston (1667-1752) was an English theologist, historian and mathematician, colleague of English physicist and mathematician Sir Isaac Newton. In 1702 Whiston inherited Newton's position as head chair of mathematics at Cambridge University. However, in 1710 he was fired from his position due to his theological stance which opposed the stance of Anglican doctrine. The map does not appear in the Leor collection, there is one copy in OCLC.
