Adam Czerniaków. Typed Letter Signed, written to the Orthodox Jewish Community Council of Budapest, in German, on letterhead of the Warsaw Judenrats, concerning the shipment of Matzah from Budapest to the Jews of Warsaw.

* With: Orthodox Jewish Community Council of Budapest. Secretarial Letter, written to the Jewish Community Council of Warsaw, offering to send Matzah to Warsaw and asking for information in regard to quantity needed. pp. 2.

Budapest, 22nd January, 1940: and Warsaw, 31st January, 1940.

Correspondence reflecting the religious needs of the Jews of Warsaw while under Nazi domination. The Jews of Budapest who, at that time, were not under Nazi occupation, sought to provide for their fellow-Jews in Poland. The head of the Warsaw Judenrat responds here that he is responsible for some 400,000 Jews and requires 1,500,000Kg of matzah for the community.
Adam Czerniakow (1880-1942) was head of the Warsaw Ghetto Jewish Council (Judenrat) during World War II. He committed suicide in July, 1942, a day after the commencement of the mass extermination of Jews known as the Grossaktion Warsaw.
