Letter from Rabbi Menachem Mendel Paneth, the Admor of Dej, Author of Ma'agalei Tzedek. 1882
Letter in the handwriting and with the signature of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Paneth, the Admor of Dej and author of Ma'agalei Tzedek. 1882.
Specifications: [1] leaf, 19x15 cm. 16 lines in his handwriting and with his signature. The letter was written between redemption and redemption - that is, between Purim and Pesach. It was sent to his nephew Rabbi Yechezkel Paneth, and among the blessings he wishes him success at a trial.
Rabbi Menachem Mendel Paneth, was born in 1818 to his father Rabbi Yechezkel Paneth of Carlsburg, author of Mareh Yechezkel. He studied under the Chatam Sofer who praised him extensively. He was the only student of the Pressburg Yeshiva to wear chassidic garb, and the Chatam Sofer, who referred to him as 'der zeidener bachur' would go for walks with him on Friday nights. Rabbi Menachem Mendel Panet was present at the Chatam Sofer's well-known revelation of Eliyahu. After his marriage he became close to the "Yismach Moshe." He later became rabbi of Dej and served as Admor beginning in 1858. In his time, it was written that many people began praying in nusach Sephard because of him, and that the city of Dej became a Chassidic stronghold. He was the leader of the Ultra-Orthodox Jews of Transylvania for several decades and one of the foremost Admors of his generation. Author of Ma'aglei Tzedek, Sha'arei Tzedek, Mishpat Tzedek and Avnei Tzedek.
The letter was sent (apparently) to Rabbi Yechezkel Paneth of Tarcal. Rabbi Yechezkel was born in Tarcal in 1852 to his father Rabbi Yehudah Leibush Paneth who was the son of Rabbi Yechezkel Paneth of Carlsburg author of Mareh Yechezkel. He studied under his uncle Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Dej and Rabbi Avraham Yehudah HaKohen Schwartz, rabbi of Mad. He was the son-in-law of Rabbi Zev Wolf Schik of Beregszasz. Lived in Beregszasz and later moved to Tarcal. He was blessed with both physical and spiritual wealth. For more information about him, see Hachatam Sofer V'Talmidav 498.
