"The Freedom Haggadah" – Arthur Waskow – New York, 1969 – First Edition – Black Rights in the United States
The Freedom Seder: A New Haggadah for Passover, Arthur I. Waskow, illustrated by Lloyd McNeill, Design by [Lou] Stovall, Inc. Published by The Micah Press, Washington, 1969. First edition. English.
An alternative Passover Haggadah, focusing on the freedom and rights of man. The editor mentions in the introduction the assassination of Martin Luther King (March 1968) and citations of his words are integrated into the Haggadah alongside with citations from Mahatma Gandhi, Hannah Arendt, Buber, Emanuel Ringlblum (about the Warsaw Ghetto) and others. Numerous texts concern the rights of blacks in the USA and other current events. The illustrations were made by the American Jazz flutist and artist Lloyd McNeill and apparently this is the first Passover Haggadah ever illustrated by an African-American artist.
48 pp, 12.5 cm. Good condition. Ownership inscription on first page. Some stains (mainly to back cover).
