Collection of Autograph Letters by the Poet and Author Zalman Shneur
20 autograph letters and 7 postcards handwritten by the poet and author Zalman Shneur (1887-1959) and sent to his friend Dr. Boris Kounine in London, from France and Switzerland, in the years 1932-1943. Hebrew, seven letters in Yiddish.
Friendly, cordial letters concerning diverse subjects. Among other subjects, Shnuer writes about his literary work and about his journalistic work; about a trip of ten weeks in America during which he delivered speeches in 40 different cities; complaints about Davar Newspaper and its editor Berl Katzenelson; about Hebrew and Yiddish newspapers, about his family's health (mainly about his wife's medical condition), about purchase of medications and a constant delivery of Insulin and lottery cards, and more.
In a number of letters from 1938 Shneur refers to the political atmosphere in Germany at the time and the attitude towards Jews; in a letter dated November 11 he refers to Kristallnacht: "…I find no rest and no peace. … the mediaeval persecutions in Ashkenaz shook me terribly. I am sick. Sick in body and soul. There is no hope". Some of the letters consist of several pages.
Enclosed: * Calling card of Joseph Walden with a short letter from him. * Nine of the original envelopes in which the letters were sent.
Size and condition vary. Good overall condition. Folding marks and creases. The postal stamp was removed from one postcard, and the corner of the card is torn.
