Leather shoe for chalitza used by a European beit din. 19th century.
The shoe was made according to the laws detailed in the Shulchan Aruch. All the stitches and the laces are made of leather, per the opinion of most Rishonim. The shoe is a small size, so that it would stay tightly on the foot, it is made for the right foot [so that they shouldn't mistakenly do chalitza on the left foot]. According to the halacha, it is necessary for a beit din to have a chalitza shoe and it is one of the "kli hadinin" [tools for the laws] listed in tractate Sanhedrin [7b]. The footwear must be owned by the one doing yibum so the beit din is "mikaneh" it to him as a "matanah al minat lihachzir" [a gift that he would return].
Chalitza shoes from the 19th century are rare, since most European beit din were not involved in chalitza at all.
