Judicial ruling regarding a monetary dispute, written by the Bais Din of Yerushalayim, headed by R. Shmuel Salant. With the signatures of R. Shmuel Salant, R. Mordechai Meir and R. Binyomin Dovid of Vilna.
R. Shmuel Salant (1816-1909) was born in Bialystok, and studied in the great yeshiva of Volozhin. After marrying the eldest daughter of R. Yosef Zundel Salant, he adopted his father-in law’s family name. In 1840 he settled in Yerusholayim which at the time had a very small community of Ashkenazic Jews. From 1848 to 1851 he served as a SHaDaR (fund-raiser), visiting the principal cities of Lithuania and Poland to raise money for the impoverished Jews of the Old Yishuv. Known as a great scholar, and beloved by the masses. He succeeded R. Meir Auerbach as Chief Rabbi of the Ashkenazic Jerusalem community in 1871. Under his guidance, the community expanded steadily growing from 5,000 to 30,000 Jews, whom he led until the advanced age of 93.
