Machzor minhag ashkenaz....very precise and elucidated well, by Wolf b"r Shimshon z"l ish Heidenheim, all customs and laws and prayers were gathered, each in their appropriate place. Rodelheim, 1800-1805. First edition. Eight volumes, about 19 cm.

Prayerbook with German translation in Tzena U'Rena letters. The prayerbook was proofread and arrnaged by Rabbi Wolf Heidenheim. This is the first edition printed by Rabbi Heidemnehim. Hundreds of laters editions were printed over the years in all Ashkenazic countries. At the start of some sections there are approbations of prominent rabbis, including Rabbi Pinchas HaLevi Horowitz, the "Ba'al Hafla'a."

With this machzor, Rav Heidenheim contributed greatly to the study and preservation of the hymns of the Ashkeanizc community.

Rabbi Wolf Heidenheim (1757-1832) was a commentator, grammarian who studied the mesorah. He printed his works on grammar, Chumashim according to the mesorah and his famed machzorim at his press in Rodehleim. His teacher, the Chatam Sofer, called him "The complete sage" and wrote (Choshen Mishpat, teshuva 89) : "He spent much time proofreading the hymns and translating them to German, if not for him, the hymns would have been forgotten and would no longer be recited in these generations."
