A leaf of a travel diary of a German tourist describing life in Jerusalem. February 11 1891. With two impressive colorful illustrations, the work of an artist.
The first illustration is on a full leaf, depicting people beside the Jaffa Gate and the inscription "Full life in Jaffa Gate". On the reverse side of the leaf, an illustration of two Yemenite Jews polishing the shoes of passers-by. This illustration is from the first wave of the immigration from Yemen which began in 1881 and it serves as an authentic historical testimony as to the life of these Yemenite immigrants, walking bare-foot in the streets of Jerusalem in their colorful clothes and skullcaps. There are almost no illustrated testimonies of those days. Impressive.
Beside the illustration there is a long description in German of the various groups of tourists staying at the Feil Hotel on the Mount of Olives, the Christian tourists visiting the city and of course, the life in Jerusalem during that period.
One leaf. Signed: "W. Allen 91".
Size: 36x28 cm.
Condition: Very Good. Very well preserved.
