Tzemach Hashem Le'Zvi - Hassidic articles on the Torah by the Rebbe Rabbi Zvi Hirsch of Nadvirna. [Berdychiv, circa 1818]. First edition. Yisrael Bak printing press. Stefansky Chassidut no. 500.
The date of printing is according to A. Ya'ari (Ha'Defus Ha'Ivri Be'Berdychiv, Kiryat Sefer, 21, 1944-1945, pp. 120-121). The decoration on the title page - a plate of a Torah scroll - is the logo of the printing press of Yisrael Bak.
Approbations by Rabbi Yisrael the son of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdychiv, Rabbi Mordechai of Kremenets and Rabbi Efrayim Zalman Margaliyot of Brody. Preface by the author's son, Rabbi David Aryeh Leib.
The copy before us contains leaf [3] (with a third approbation by Rabbi Efrayim Zalman Margaliyot and omissions from Parashot Ki Tisah and Shemini), which exists in only some of the copies of the book.
The Rebbe Rabbi Zvi Hirsch of Nadvirna (1740-1802), a leading Rebbe of the third generation of Hassidism, a disciple of the Maggid of Mezeritch. His rabbi was Rabbi Yechiel Michel of Złoczew, who was known to say that Rabbi Zvi Hirsh was the greatest of his disciples and that Eliyahu Ha'Navi desires his closeness. Among Rabbi Zvi's disciples were Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kosov, Rabbi Zvi Hirsch of Zidichov, Rabbi Avraham David of Buchach and others. He served as Maggid Meisharim in Nadvirna until his death.
He wrote several compositions and was famous for his primary work Tzemach Hashem Le'Zvi. His book Alfa Beta was published in many editions and Rabbi Eliezer Papo, author of Pele Yo'etz, copied the book and included it in his composition.
