Pri Megadim - Frankfurt 1801 - Signatures and Glosses by Rabbi Yehoshua Folk Av Beit Din of Breslau and Additional Geniuses
Pri Megadim on the Shach and the Turei Zahav Yoreh Deah. Frankfurt an der Oder 1801.
On the title page and the Forsazt leaves, ownership inscriptions and signatures of Rabbi Yehoshua Folk Av Beit Din of Breslau.
Many signatures of "Ya'akov ofKavlin".
The glosses
Throughout the book there are many long, scholarly glosses with important content on the words of the 'Pri Megadim'. They were most likely handwritten by Rabbi Yehoshua Folk.
It is obvious that some of the glosses were written by a later writer who adds to the words of Rabbi Folk (see for example leaf 82). In many instances, Rabbi Yehoshua Folk refers to the novealle of his in-law, Rabbi Lipman Rawitsch (see hereinafter).
There are also many references to the Me'il Tzeddaka Responsa.
An important and interesting comment appears on leaf 94: "a bird named pheasant was brought to me and I saw it had all the signs of a Kosher bird and the woman had testified … that such a bird was eaten by the Namegen family … and I rendered it Kosher … and I have heard that this is the bird … that Rabbi Yehuda permitted to eat…"
Rabbi Yehoshua Folk, the son of Rabbi Ya'akov Yehuda Leib Folk Av Beit Din of Dyhernfurth and Moreh Tzeddek in Breslau. He served as a head of a yeshiva for fifty years.
Rabbi Yehoshua was the son-in-law of Rabbi Lipman Rawitsch, the grandson of the 'Beit Meir', who was a Dayan in Lisa at the Beit Din of the 'Chavat Da'at'. He serbed as a Moreh Tzeddek in Breslau and later as Av Beit Din.
We do not know of Divrei Torah and halachic rulings by Rabbi Yehoshua Folk, except for the glosses that appear in the book before us. In general, a manuscript by him has never been seen in auctions! Extremely rare!
Condition: Good. Wear and time stains. Worn binding.
