Letter from Rabbi Yehuda Leib Tsirelson

Letter written and signed by Rabbi Yehuda Leib Tsirelson - rabbi of Bessarabia and Kishinev, dated 15th of Tevet, 1928.

Interesting response regarding a sale contract with a gentile. After some short prefaces, the gaon refers the decision to the local beit din according to what they would decide in a special sitting, and holds back from ruling on the question that one of the dayanim asked: "for this reason, it cannot be that I will answer in this type of discussion to one of the members of the beit din, even if he would be  a great of the greatest.."

Rabbi Yehuda Leib Tsirelson [1860 - 1941] was the rabbi of Bessarabia, Kishinev in Russia [after the city did not have a rabbi for over 70 years]. He was also rabbi in Pryluky for about thirty years. In his youth, he studied by Admor Yisrael Noach Schneersohn of Chabad, a son of the Tzemach Tzedek, who gave him rabbinical smicha. In the 1910s he was apointed member of the Moetzet Gedolei HaTorah of Agudat Yisrael. When he served in the Kishinev rabbinate he established an entire network of Talmud Torahs and yeshivot. Many of the alumni of his institutions [primarily in Kishinev] became rabbis and Admors. Rabbi Tsirelson was killed during the Second World War by a German air raid in Kishinev and was buried in the old cemetery in the city.
