Surviving Remnants – an original honor certificate of the 'Stern' Sports Club in Veretzlow, given to Adolf Berman for marking the establishment of Mapam Party uniting 'Poalei Zion' and 'Ha'Shomer Ha'Tzair', 1949
Avraham Adolf Berman (1906-1978) was born in Warsaw to a Zionist family. He received his Ph.D. in Poland parallel to his Zionist activity in the left-winged 'Poalei Zion'. During World War II, he served as the CEO of the Centos Company for helping children in Warsaw. He was a member of the Jewish underground organization in the ghetto and of its presidency. At the end of the war, he was chosen as a delegate of the communist polish parliament and later as the chairman of the Committee of Polish Jews. In 1950, he immigrated to Israel and was chosen as a member of the Knesset on behalf of Mapam and Maki.
The certificate before us was given to Berman by the heads of the 'Stern' sports Club to note the establishment of the Mapam Party. Mapam was a socialistic-Zionist party which was founded in 1948 as a union between 'Mifleget Poalim Ha'Shomer Ha'Tzair' and 'Poalei Zion'. The party identified with the ideology of the USSR and the worldwide communist movement, except for the attitude of the communist movement to Zionism.
The certificate notes Berman's involvement in uniting the socialistic-Zionist parties in Poland, before immigrating to Israel.
