A rare letter with important content handwritten by Shoshana Buchmil, the founder of the Zionist organization "Shilo". Her signature and the signature of her husband Dr. Yehoshua Buchmil. 1909.
"From the Diaspora we inquire as to your health … it is good that you are living in our country, but our consolation is that we have left the country to work for it. I believe in my people and their power and I believe that Israel will return to the land of its forefathers …". She ends the letters: "Shalom to our country! Shalom to the Judaean Mountains! With the blessing of Zion, Shoshana Buchmil". Then, the signature of her husband, Yehoshua Buchmil.
The letter was sent from Napoli, when the couple travelled abroad due to important Zionist activity (described hereinafter), most likely to their friends in Jaffa Menachem Shenkin and Kaddish Silman.
Shoshana (Rosa Silman) Buchmil (1876-1933). Already in her youth she was known as one of the most active women of the Zionist Movement. At the age of 17, she founded the first Zionist association of 'Chovevei Zion'. She was one of the first activists of political Zionism and a member of 'Poalei Zion'. She was also one of the founders of the Women's Zionist Federation.
Dr. Yehoshua Heshel Buchmil (1869-1938) a lawyer and Zionist activist. He had a remarkable propagandic ability to promote Zionist thought and the Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel. He was a supporter of the 'Chibat Zion' Movement which was founded in 1881. He was sent by Herzl from Austria to Russia to bring the Russian Chovevei Zion closer to political Zionism. On his way, he founded in Munich the first Zionist Student Association. He was one of the opponents to the Uganda Scheme.
The background of the letter
In 1906, the Buchmil couple was sent to the Land of Israel by the Odessa Committee to examine the conditions for settling the country. Two years later, the Committee published a report pointing at the lack of capital of the Zionist institutions.
subsequent to its conclusions, the couple founded the Zionist organization "Shilo" which was meant to be a large popular movement whose cause was to raise funds for the settlement of the Land of Israel from the Jews abroad.
At the beginning of 1909, the Buchmil couple left Jaffa and travelled abroad to realize their vision. Shoshana travelled to New York and Yehoshua to Russia.
A touching, extremely rare item!
The letter is written on an interesting postcard depicting the harbor of Port Sa'id (Egypt).
Condition: Good.
