Letter by the British Government to Rabbi Shimon Luria, One of the Leaders of Agudat Yisrael – 1943 – about the Jewish Neighborhood and Holy Places of Hebron
Historical, rare and interesting.
The letter before us was written in 1943 by the stand-in secretary of the British Government, Mr. Z. Jacob.
In the Midst of World War II, Rabbi Luria complained about the different restrictions imposed on the Jews regarding visits to the Cave of Machpelah, including payment collection. Rabbi Luria also describes the general condition of the ancient Jewish cemetery and its severe neglect as well as the dreariness of the Jewish neighborhood, which had been abandoned after the 1929 Riots.
Jacob response appears in the letter before us. Jacob response is laconic and elusive, removing the responsibility from the British Government and laying it on the Jews and the national Council.
20x33 cm.
