Letter by the Shadar (Emissary) Rabbi Yosef Horowitz – Ferrara 1908
Letter of greetings and other matters handwritten and signed by Rabbi Yosef Horowitz to his friend Rabbi David Matityahu. Ferrara 1908.
The letter before us was written while he was staying in Ferrara, Italy.
Th eletter is written on a postcard in nice, orderly Sephardic script.
Rabbi Yosef Horowitz was born in Meknes, Morocco in 1861. When he was twelve, he immigrated to the land of Israel and was educated by the most prominent Ma'arav rabbis of Jerusalem Rabbi Eliezer Ben Tovo and Rabbi Raphael Meir Panigel. He served as Dayan and Moreh Tzedek of the Sephardic community of Jerusalem together with Rabbi Moshe Malka and Rabbi Nachman Batito. In 1913, he became the rabbi of Jaffa until the appointment of Rabbi Ben Zion Chai Uziel. Since 1873, he was sent several times as an emissary to various countries. The King of Italy found him favorable and this assisted him in raising funds for the poor of Jerusalem.
